Is a Bearded Dragon right
for you?
Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog, today I am going to talk
about the Bearded Dragon as a pet.
Bearded Dragons or ‘Beardies’ are often advertised as low cost and low
maintenance…which I have to say is 100% false!
In the 8 months I have now had
my Groot - who is a 4 year old adopted boy - he has cost me a LOT of money and not
only that, but he requires DAILY attention.
In my experience, Bearded Dragons are friendly,
cute, funny to watch and overall a great pet. But you have to think of the
other ‘downsides’ before you jump into this.
- Having a Beardie is a huge responsibility and they
need daily feeding, that includes insects AND vegetables.
- They should have daily exercise, but most owners are
too busy to let their pet out daily- they should get about 4 days exercise a
week minimum.
- You have to be comfortable with feeding insects to
him/her.
- They need spraying with water daily (I do it 3 times
a day) as they are not good at drinking, or a bath every week (which I also do
and recommend)
- This is just a minor thing, but bearded dragons
defecate or…poo…every week or so, and they are very picky where they do it too.
Groot’s fave spot is the bath!
- The vivarium needs to be between 4’2 and 5’0ft long
and 2’3ft ish back…so, HUGE.
- Females will get egg-bound if the substrate (I
recommend Beardie life) is not deep enough, and if you have a mating pair, you
must find and freeze eggs so they don’t hatch.
That's all for now folks! But please, if you still want a bearded dragon, adopt one. There are hundreds online in need of a forever home...
